Discover the Wadden Sea

In the interactive digital storybook Amsel Explores | The Wadden Sea, children explore different natural habitats in the Wadden Sea and discover the unique landscape and its many inhabitants on the North Sea island of Föhr. Join a young blackbird on her first big adventure as a junior reporter. Along the way, she meets Jonne and Enken, a pair of oystercatchers who return to the Wadden Sea each spring to nest and raise their chicks. But it soon becomes clear that things on the island are not as they usually are. Help Amsel, Jonne, and Enken overcome the challenges they encounter and find a new, safe home for the oystercatchers. Each chapter introduces new animals to discover. Solve small puzzles and play mini-games to learn all about them.

Amsel Explores | The Wadden Sea is the second game from Meander Interactive UG. The edutainment indie studio was founded with a clear vision: to create high-quality, engaging, and educational content for children.

The Wadden Sea is one of Europe's most fascinating and sensitive ecosystems, yet it is often overlooked. The idea for Amsel Explores | The Wadden Sea grew from the wish to introduce children to the unique feeling of this habitat.

Initiated by Meander Interactive and supported by partners in research, education, and nature conservation, the project combines modern game design with in-depth knowledge of the Wadden Sea.

Story

In Amsel Explores | The Wadden Sea, children follow a young blackbird—a curious junior journalist. Amsel always has her camera close at hand, and her backpack is filled with hundreds of notes because she wants to know everything!

For her very first report, she travels to the Wadden Sea to write about life on the North Sea coast. There she meets Jonne and Enken, a pair of oystercatchers who have lost their nesting site—their home on the island—after a terrible accident. Can Amsel help them find a new nesting site in time?

Gameplay

Children explore a living world in the rhythm of the tides, discover animals and plants, and learn through small adventures, mini-games and interesting puzzles how important the protection of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is.

Janis brings his passion for environmental education and interactive storytelling to Amsel Explores | The Wadden Sea. His extensive knowledge of the Wadden Sea comes from his Federal Volunteer Ecological Year at the Wadden Sea Conservation Station, where he gained and shared in-depth knowledge of the ecosystem, its wildlife, and nature conservation as a bird and mudflat guide. His focus is on creating and implementing environmental learning content that inspires children to discover ecological connections through engaging stories that encourage empathy and action.

Marlene Käseberg

Marlene creates digital experiences that truly connect with children—visually, narratively, and emotionally. As the founder of Meander Interactive and creator of the Meander Framework, she combines age-appropriate design with meaningful themes such as nature education, literacy, and self-efficacy. With Amsel Explores | The Wadden Sea, Marlene wants children to discover, learn, and play on their own terms—and to find out about the Wadden Sea and its fascinating wildlife in a playful, pressure-free way.
